Common Causes of Periodontal Disease

Wondering what causes periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease? The simple answer is that periodontal disease is caused by bad bacteria in your mouth. When you allow too much bacteria to build up in your mouth, the bacteria will begin to cause a buildup of plaque on your teeth. This plaque buildup is the beginning stages of gum disease. Soon, it will begin to create problems for both your gums and your teeth. If left alone, this first stage of gum disease will lead to the second, third and fourth stages of gum disease.

Common causes of periodontal disease

The following list includes some of the more common causes that will lead to someone receiving a periodontal disease diagnosis.

Poor oral hygiene

Not taking proper care of one’s oral health is the most common cause of periodontal disease. When daily brushing and flossing are not performed and regular dental appointments are not made, it is often only a matter of time before someone is diagnosed with periodontal disease. Improper brushing and flossing are not able to remove all of the bad bacteria in the mouth. This can lead to an infection that will continue to become worse over time until professional dental treatment is sought.

Smoking, chewing tobacco

Tobacco use is another very common cause of periodontal disease. It should be completely avoided for one’s overall oral health as well as one’s overall general health.

A diet that lacks adequate nutrition

An improper diet is one that does not include enough nutrition to fight off any bacterial infections that may be existing in the mouth.

When hormones change it can lead to the mouth becoming more sensitive. This hormone change increases the risk of periodontal disease, especially in both pregnant and menopausal women.

Genetics play a large role in one’s chances when it comes to being diagnosed with periodontal disease. There are tests that dental patients can take to help them understand the role genetics play in their overall oral health.

Stress and anxiety

When someone is undergoing a lot of stress or anxiety, it lowers their immune system’s ability to protect and keep them healthy. When someone’s immune system is not up to par, they are much more susceptible to disease as their body is not strong enough to fight.
